CHAPTER SEVEN

Brandi reached the bottom of the stairs before she realized she wasn’t even looking for Whitney. Instead, she’d been basking in the memory of Zack with the little girl in his arms.

The child had been charming. And Zack hadn’t exactly been hard on the eyes, either, Brandi had to admit. Despite his slightly rumpled appearance – or because of it – he had a personal magnetism that she’d bet few of the other men at this party did. There was something heartwarming about a guy who ignored his dress-up clothes in order to play with a couple of kids.

Brandi shook her head in rueful disbelief. She was suddenly discovering a romantic streak she’d never dreamed she possessed!

She tried to focus her attention on the swirl of guests. Surely by now Whitney would be here, and once busy with her friend, Brandi would forget all about Zack.

The party had grown even larger in the few minutes she had been upstairs. Guests streamed in, and she had trouble making her way through the entrance hall and into the living room. Standing near the enormous, glittering Christmas tree in a bay window was a group of executives; they waved her over, but Brandi smiled and shook her head and went on looking for Whitney.

The massive doors between the main rooms had been thrown open. Waiters were circulating with trays of drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Brandi took a glass of champagne and wandered toward the dining room.

Her progress was slow; several times she was interrupted by people who exclaimed over how well she looked and how long it had been since they’d seen her. They made such a big deal of it that she felt guilty. Just how long had it been since she’d attended one of these parties, anyway?

She’d just spotted Whitney, at the far side of the dining room, when the manager of the Minneapolis store buttonholed her to ask how she was planning to handle the new bookkeeping system the head office was putting into place. It took twenty minutes to dislodge him, and by then cocktail hour was over and people were starting to drift out of the room.

Brandi was just looking around for her friend again when Whitney appeared beside her, tall and sleek in pure white silk and a neckline that outdid every other woman in the room.

“There you are,” Whitney announced. “I was beginning to think you’d stood me up.”

“I wouldn’t dare.” Brandi gave her a hug. “You look wonderful!”

The man beside Whitney snorted. Whitney turned to him with a stunning smile. “You’ve already made it clear what you think of the neckline, Max, so no further editorial comment is necessary. You remember Max, don’t you, Brandi?”

“Of course.” Brandi extended a hand to Whitney’s husband.

Whitney glanced around the room. “I suppose we’d better move toward the pool – that’s where dinner is being served.” She eyed Brandi. “It’s very polite of you not to wrinkle your nose. When I first heard about it, I asked if I should bring my swimsuit.
